What sealant to choose?
There is a great number of sealants on the market today. They differ by the material they are made of: silicone, acrylic, siliconized acrylic, silicate, bitumen and hybrid polymer. Sealants also differ by application: general purpose, sanitary, aquarium, heat-resistant, natural stone, roofing and so on. How do you pick the right one out of all this variety?
A bathroom sealant, for example, has to resist moisture and mold. Here a KUDO® sanitary silicone sealant is the better choice — it contains more fungicide than a general purpose grade and resists mold for much longer. For an aquarium, though, neither sanitary nor general purpose sealants will do — precisely because of that fungicide, which kills not only mold and mildew but fish and aquatic plants as well. What you need here is a dedicated aquarium sealant with no fungicide at all.
To fill a joint — between door trim and a wall indoors, for instance — a KUDO® acrylic sealant is the better choice: unlike silicone, it is paintable. Joints in parquet flooring also call for an acrylic sealant, but not a general purpose one — a dedicated parquet grade. It is harder and more wear-resistant, and it sands easily.
When the joint between a window frame and a wall is sealed, vapor permeability matters a great deal, so that no condensation forms inside the joint. Acrylic and siliconized acrylic sealants are the right choice here.
Heat-resistant sealants also come in different grades. Silicone grades, for example, withstand heating up to 300°C and suit the joint between a countertop and a cooktop. Stoves and fireplaces call for the KUDO® silicate sealant, which withstands 1200°C (1500°C for short periods). Bear in mind, though, that a silicate sealant is completely inelastic — it cannot seal a joint that moves.
