We are often asked how to paint a plastic part properly. In answer to those questions we have put together a detailed guide to doing it right.
Steps of the job:
1. Clean the surface of dirt and degrease it thoroughly. The silicone remover KUDO® KU-9100 and a clean cloth are the best choice for this.
2. Apply one coat of transparent primer to improve the adhesion of the following coats. For this we recommend the transparent plastic primer KUDO® KU-6000. When the adhesive activator is used, no additional mechanical preparation is required.
Note! The aluminum powder in the primer works as an indicator of even application. The particles have to be spread evenly over the whole area as a thin haze. There is no need to make them cover the surface completely.
2.1 If you are using a metallic paint, lay down a ground coat of white primer-enamel: it brings out the decorative effect of the metallic. We recommend the white primer-enamel for plastic KUDO® KU-6003. The white primer is applied in two or three thin coats, so that it covers the original color of the part completely. Intercoat drying time is 10 minutes. With a paint that has no metallic effect this step can be skipped.
Twenty minutes after the last coat of primer you can start applying the topcoat.
3. Apply the paint in several coats. Both acrylic and alkyd paints can be used. The coats have to be thin, to avoid flooding the surface and getting runs. For a metallic effect we recommend the acrylic spray paint SILVER GRAIN FINISH KUDO® KU-10xx.
Important! The acrylic spray paint SILVER GRAIN FINISH KUDO® KU-10xx needs no clear coat over it: it is hard and weather-resistant on its own. When the metallic automotive repair paint KUDO® KU-41xxxx is used as the topcoat, the automotive varnish KUDO® KU‑9010 is mandatory: it gives the coating the hardness and the weather resistance it needs. The clear coat may be applied no earlier than 15‑20 minutes after the paint.
Note! When the job is finished, turn the can upside down and spray until nothing comes out, so that the spray tip does not clog.
